House of Representatives Mourns the Loss of Veteran Photojournalist Elijah Olaluyi

The Nigerian House of Representatives has expressed its deep sadness over the passing of Elijah Olaluyi, a dedicated member of the House Press Corps, who died on Thursday at the age of 62 after a brief illness. Olaluyi was a renowned photojournalist with New Telegraph, passionately covering the activities of the Green Chamber until his demise.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, described Olaluyi as a seasoned media professional whose contributions will be greatly missed. “He was a veteran media professional who covered the National Assembly for many years and possessed invaluable institutional memories of people and events within the federal parliament,” Speaker Abbas stated.

Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu also paid tribute to Olaluyi, highlighting his exceptional photographic skills and commitment to ethical journalism. “Until his death Thursday evening, Olaluyi covered the activities of the House of Representatives with zeal and professional integrity,” Rt. Hon. Kalu added.

The House of Representatives has extended its condolences to Olaluyi’s family, colleagues at New Telegraph, the House of Representatives Press Corps, the Nigerian Union of Journalists, and all who knew him. The House prays for the repose of his soul and for strength and comfort during this difficult time.

This tragic loss comes after at least 28 journalists were harassed, beaten, or denied access while covering the Nigerian state elections in March 2023 ¹. The Committee to Protect Journalists has called for Nigerian authorities to thoroughly investigate these incidents and ensure journalists’ safety while reporting on political issues.

Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., Spokesman for the Nigeria House of Representatives, signed the press statement announcing Olaluyi’s passing.
