NGO Launches Empowerment Programme for Families of Deceased Journalists in Ogun

Abeokuta, Ogun State – In a bid to support the families of journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty, the Oniroyin Support Initiative (OSI), a non-governmental organisation, is set to launch an empowerment programme aimed at improving the welfare of bereaved families in Ogun State.

The initiative, announced by the Chairman of the OSI Board of Trustees, Mrs. Funke Fadugba, underscores the organisation’s commitment to honouring the contributions of journalists who made significant impacts in society. “We are proud to launch this programme, which demonstrates our commitment to supporting the families of journalists who sadly passed away when their services were most needed. We believe their families deserve our support and care,” Fadugba stated.

The launch event is scheduled to hold on **Thursday, 27th February, 2025**, at the Basic Trust International, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, by 12 noon. The programme will feature the public presentation of cheques and grants to selected families of deceased journalists, aimed at ensuring their continued well-being.

Renowned journalist, Mr. Richard Akinnola, will chair the event, while the Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, will deliver the keynote address. Dignitaries expected at the event include the Onirete of Irete-Ijebu, Oba Abdulganiyu Olusegun Awokoya, who will serve as the Royal Father of the Day, and Chief (Mrs.) Bola Obasanjo, wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who will be the Mother of the Day. Also in attendance will be the Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker.

According to the OSI Convener, Comrade Tunde Oladunjoye, the programme is designed to empower families who have lost their loved ones, particularly journalists, in the line of duty. “Together, we can make a difference in their lives and promote a culture of welfare and safety for journalists, ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten and their families are supported in their time of need,” Oladunjoye said.

In addition to the empowerment initiative, OSI, in partnership with the Ogun State Ministry of Health, will provide free medical outreach to journalists attending the event. This dual approach aims to address both the financial and health needs of the beneficiaries.

The programme is expected to draw widespread attention to the plight of journalists’ families and reinforce the importance of safeguarding the welfare of media professionals who risk their lives in the pursuit of truth and public service.
