Ipokia Chairman Condemns Alleged Killing of Resident by Police Border Patrol Team
The Executive Chairman of Ipokia Local Government, Ogun State, Hon. Johnson Akohomeh Avoseh, has condemned the reported killing of Mr. Owolabi Oniyiku by men of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Border Patrol Team along Ifonyintedo Road.
Avoseh described the incident as tragic and deeply disturbing, expressing condolences to the family of the deceased and the people of Ifonyintedo and Ipokia Local Government.
The council chairman called on the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, psc, FCSS, MNIPR, to immediately constitute a transparent and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Oniyiku’s death.
He urged the police authorities to identify the officer or officers involved and ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable in accordance with the law.
According to him, “Every human life is precious, and no circumstance should justify the unlawful taking of the life of a citizen,” stressing that the people of Ipokia deserve to know the truth and see justice take its proper course.
While acknowledging the anger and grief generated by the incident, Avoseh appealed to youths and residents of Ifonyintedo Ward to remain calm and peaceful, urging them not to take the law into their own hands or engage in actions capable of further endangering lives and property.
The chairman also disclosed that concerns over what residents describe as an excessive number of police checkpoints across roads in the local government would be discussed at the next Local Government Security Meeting.
He said relevant security agencies and traditional rulers from various communities would be invited to deliberate on the issue and work out measures to ensure that legitimate security operations are conducted responsibly while protecting the rights, dignity and safety of residents.
Avoseh further appealed to the Divisional Police Officers of Idi-Iroko and Ipokia Police Divisions to ensure that officers under their respective commands operate with professionalism, restraint and respect for members of the public.
He urged the two police divisions to cooperate fully with any investigation into the incident and take necessary steps to rebuild confidence between the police and communities within the local government.
The council chairman described the people of Ipokia as peaceful, hardworking and law-abiding citizens who deserve protection and respect from security agencies.
He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, saying the local government shares in their grief and remains committed to pursuing justice through the appropriate channels.
Avoseh called on all police officers serving within Ipokia Local Government to uphold the principles of respect, fairness, accountability and professionalism in their dealings with residents.
He stressed that strengthening trust between security agencies and the communities they serve remains essential to achieving lasting peace and security across the local government.
