Ipokia LG Begins Cataract Screening, to Fund Surgeries for Indigent Residents
IPOKIA — The Ipokia Local Government has commenced a comprehensive cataract screening exercise for residents battling sight impairment, as part of efforts to improve access to essential healthcare services at the grassroots.
The exercise, organised in collaboration with the Ipokia Health Authority, commenced on August 13, 2027, at the Ipokia Local Government Council Secretariat. It is aimed at identifying eligible beneficiaries who will undergo corrective cataract surgery fully funded by the Local Government.
Speaking during the exercise, the Executive Chairman of Ipokia Local Government, Hon. Johnson Akohomeh Avoseh, described the intervention as a deliberate investment in the health and well-being of residents, particularly indigent members of the community whose vision has been affected by cataracts.
Avoseh said restoring the sight of residents living with cataracts would help improve their dignity, independence and overall quality of life.
He assured residents that the intervention would not be a one-off exercise, noting that his administration would continue to support healthcare programmes capable of providing lasting solutions to common health challenges within the Local Government.
According to him, the initiative would be sustained as resources and circumstances permit, particularly where appropriate medical intervention can significantly improve the health and well-being of residents.
The Chairman also reiterated that healthcare delivery remains an integral part of his administration’s development agenda, with emphasis on ensuring that residents are not denied access to necessary medical care because of financial constraints.
The screening exercise was conducted by relevant health personnel who assessed the medical conditions of participants and determined their suitability for the proposed surgical intervention.
The selected beneficiaries are expected to undergo corrective cataract surgery at State Hospital, Ota, with the full cost of the procedure to be borne by Ipokia Local Government.
Avoseh was accompanied during his interaction with the cataract patients by the Leader of the Legislative House and representative of Ifonyintedo Ward, Hon. Adeyanju Akeem Alamu, and the Health Secretary of Ipokia Local Government, Dr. Akindele Adebayo.
The initiative, which has beneficiaries drawn from communities across the Local Government, is positioned as part of the administration’s broader commitment to strengthening grassroots healthcare and ensuring that residents receive medically appropriate interventions regardless of their financial circumstances.
The Local Government said the programme reflects its determination to place the welfare and well-being of the people at the centre of its governance.
