OGEPA Begins Evacuation of Illegally Dumped Slags in Ogijo Communities
Ogijo – The Ogun State Government, through the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), has commenced the evacuation of slags illegally dumped in parts of Ogijo as part of ongoing remediation efforts aimed at eliminating all forms of lead contamination in the industrial town.
The exercise forms part of the state’s environmental protection and public health intervention designed to restore affected communities and prevent further exposure to hazardous industrial waste.
According to the government, the evacuation is targeted at illegally disposed slags identified in some communities within Ogijo, with the aim of ensuring their safe removal and proper disposal in line with environmental safety standards.
The remediation exercise underscores the commitment of the Ogun State Government to safeguarding the health of residents, protecting the environment, and enforcing strict compliance with environmental regulations.
Authorities reaffirmed that the state would continue to monitor industrial activities across Ogun to prevent illegal waste disposal and hold individuals or organisations found culpable accountable under relevant environmental laws.
Residents have also been urged to cooperate with officials carrying out the exercise and to report any cases of illegal dumping of hazardous waste to the appropriate authorities.
The evacuation exercise is expected to significantly reduce the risk of lead contamination and further strengthen Ogun State’s efforts toward promoting a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment.
