Breaking: Ogun Court Rejects Postponement of Local Government Elections

In a landmark ruling, the Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has struck out a request by 16 political parties to indefinitely postpone the upcoming local government elections. The parties had argued that the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) acted unilaterally in setting the election date without consulting them.
However, Presiding Judge Hon. Justice T.A. Okunsokan disagreed, stating that there is no constitutional or electoral law requirement for OGSIEC to consult political parties before fixing election dates.
Additionally, the court dismissed the parties’ concern that the Ondo State gubernatorial elections, scheduled for the same day, justified postponing the Ogun local government elections.
As a result, the court upheld the original election date of November 16, 2024, maintaining the status quo ¹ ³. This decision clears the way for the elections to proceed as planned.
