Ogun Government Launches Vehicular Emission Control Scheme to Combat Air Pollution

Abeokuta, Ogun State – In a significant move to improve air quality and curb hazardous pollution from vehicles, the Ogun State Government officially flagged off the Vehicular Emission Control Scheme on [insert date]. The initiative, aimed at reducing the harmful effects of vehicular emissions on the environment and public health, was unveiled at the Skating Ground, Post Office, Ibara, Abeokuta.
During the event, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, highlighted the role of consultants from the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) in conducting vehicle tests and issuing emission certificates. He stated, “If your vehicle is found emitting excessive smoke, you will be required to present your Vehicle Emission Certificate. This certificate will detail the issues with your vehicle and provide recommendations for necessary repairs.”
The Special Adviser to the Governor on OGEPA, Hon. Farouk Akintunde, emphasized that the scheme is not merely a regulatory measure but a moral obligation to safeguard the health and well-being of residents. He noted, “The vehicular emission control scheme is a critical component of Ogun State’s strategy to tackle air pollution. It aims to reduce the release of harmful pollutants from vehicles, thereby protecting both the environment and public health.”
Hon. Akintunde also revealed plans to organize training and capacity-building programs for enforcement officers to ensure effective monitoring and compliance with the scheme.
In his remarks, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), DCP Bolanle Muritala, stressed the importance of uniformity in the scheme’s implementation across the state. He urged enforcement teams to avoid unnecessary confrontations while carrying out their duties. DCP Muritala also suggested expanding the initiative to address other sources of pollution, such as the burning of tyres, wood, and bushes.
Commander Seni Ogunyemi, Commandant of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), called on road users to cooperate with the government in achieving a cleaner, smoke-free environment. He appealed to motorists and stakeholders to support the initiative for the benefit of all residents.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by representatives from transportation unions, Vehicle Inspection Officers, So-Safe Corps, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and consultants for the Emission Control Scheme.
