Environmental Degradation: Ogun Assembly Invites Dangote Cement, Trains Members on Effective Representation
Members of the Ogun State House of Assembly today took turns to decry the level of environmental degradation being caused by the Dangote Cement Ibese, describing it as inimical to the overall welfare and well-being of the people of the host communities and the State.
Hence, the Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide has invited the management of the Cement Plant, Ibese to appear before the State lawmakers on next week Wednesday, 17th July, 2024 at 1.00pm prompt.
The Speaker noted that what the Honourable members who passed through the company saw the previous day was that the company’s activities were degrading the environment and that was unsustainable, saying the Assembly could not allow such to continue.
Earlier in their presentations, Honourables Adegoke Adeyanju, Bisi Oyedele, Samusideen Lawal, Yusuf Amosun, Oluseun Adesanya, and Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye lamented that a company like Dangote Cement dealing majorly in production and haulage of cement should have a trailer park as part of its company’s operating approval.
They unanimously called for the immediate compliance with physical planning law in the operation of the cement company, saying that their activities affected over 50 communities that had been thrown into darkness in the last two years.
According to the lawmakers, indiscriminate parking by trailer drivers of the company and their carefree attitude had continually led to avoidable loss of lives and properties.
In another development, the State lawmakers today underwent a day of capacity building on their critical role in nation-building with the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide explains the essence of understanding a “matter of urgent public importance and personal explanation”, to draw the attention of the government to critical issues affecting constituents and the State.
In their various papers at the capacity building program, a former Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. Muyiwa Adenopo, and Evang. Morakinyo Akinleye, dwelled extensively on the responsibilities of the legislative arm in ensuring quality representation and ensuring robust legislative-executive relationship as a panacea for good governance.
