Obafemi Owode Chairman Backs Demolition of Shops Under High-Tension Power Lines, Promises Relief for Traders

The Executive Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, Ambassador Adesina ‘Lanre Ogunsola, FCPA, has affirmed the demolition of shops and other unauthorized structures located beneath high-tension power lines in Mowe, describing the exercise as a necessary step to protect lives and ensure public safety.

The demolition, carried out by officials of the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, targeted illegal structures along the Mowe Market Express Road setbacks to improve traffic flow and address environmental concerns within the area.
During an inspection visit to the site as part of the weekly environmental sanitation exercise, Ogunsola said the action was in the interest of public safety, recalling a tragic incident in Mowe Market over a year ago in which three persons reportedly lost their lives to electrocution.
He appealed to affected traders to remain calm and understand that the government’s priority is to safeguard lives and prevent future disasters.
The council chairman also held a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, stressing the need for proper communication with the local government before carrying out such exercises, particularly those affecting markets. He noted that, as the Chief Security Officer of the local government, he should be adequately informed to facilitate effective engagement with residents and stakeholders.
Ogunsola disclosed that discussions had commenced between the local government and relevant stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions aimed at reducing the impact of the demolition on affected traders. He assured them that efforts would be made to explore alternative means of livelihood.
Speaking during the visit, the Olu of Mowe, Oba Yayah Oriyomi, commended the council chairman for personally assessing the situation, describing the demolition as unexpected.
The monarch expressed confidence that Ogunsola’s intervention would help calm tensions in the market and urged traders to respect government decisions while embracing dialogue as the path to resolving their grievances.
Also speaking, the Iyaloja General of Mowe Market, Alhaja Ganiyat Morenikeji, and the Babaloja, Alhaji Nurudeen Aina Alowonle, appealed to the local government to provide an alternative location where displaced traders could continue their businesses.
Responding, Ogunsola assured the market leaders that their requests would be given due consideration. He urged traders to remain peaceful and continue their lawful activities while the council works towards addressing their concerns.
