Ipokia, Ifangni Strengthen Cross-Border Ties, Seek Enhanced Security and Economic Cooperation

The Executive Chairman of Ipokia Local Government, Hon. Johnson Akohomeh Avoseh, has reaffirmed the commitment of the council to deepening cross-border cooperation with Ifangni Municipality in the Republic of Benin, with a focus on security, economic development, trade facilitation, and regional integration.

Avoseh made this known while receiving an official delegation from Ifangni Municipality led by its Mayor, Aguemon Dossou Anselme, during a courtesy visit to the Ipokia Local Government Secretariat.
The visit, which brought together government officials, community leaders, traders, economic operators, and security representatives from both sides of the border, was aimed at strengthening the longstanding relationship between the neighbouring communities and exploring new areas of collaboration.
Speaking during the meeting, the Ipokia council chairman congratulated the Mayor of Ifangni and members of his administration on their election and assumption of office. He also extended his congratulations to the newly elected President of the Republic of Benin, President Romuald Wadagni.
Avoseh described the relationship between Ipokia and Ifangni as one rooted in shared history, cultural heritage, family ties, and economic interdependence that predates modern national boundaries.
According to him, Ipokia’s strategic location as a border local government and gateway to Ogun State places it in a unique position to facilitate regional trade, investment, and economic integration within the ECOWAS sub-region.
He highlighted the local government’s agricultural potential and commercial importance, particularly the role of the Idiroko Border Corridor as a major route for the movement of goods and services between Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.
The chairman noted that discussions during the meeting focused on critical issues including border security, trade and investment, cultural exchanges, youth development, sports cooperation, and mechanisms for institutionalising collaboration between both local authorities.
Responding on behalf of the Beninese delegation, Mayor Aguemon Dossou Anselme expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded his team and praised the people of Ipokia for their hospitality and commitment to peaceful coexistence.
The mayor stressed the need for stronger cooperation in tackling transnational crimes, advocating enhanced intelligence sharing and closer collaboration among security agencies operating along the border corridor.
He noted that criminal elements should not be allowed to exploit international boundaries to evade justice and called for sustained joint efforts to safeguard lives and property.
Anselme also advocated greater economic cooperation between both communities, noting that increased commercial activities and investment opportunities could boost local economies and improve the welfare of residents on both sides of the border.
The issue of cross-border movement was also discussed, with both parties emphasizing the importance of compliance with ECOWAS protocols and immigration regulations to facilitate seamless and lawful travel.
Participants further identified sports and cultural exchanges as effective tools for strengthening people-to-people relationships and fostering unity between the two communities. Football was specifically highlighted as a platform for promoting social cohesion and intercultural understanding.
Avoseh assured the delegation that the concerns and recommendations raised during the meeting would receive due consideration and expressed optimism about future engagements, including a reciprocal visit to the Republic of Benin.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing security cooperation, promoting economic growth, and advancing regional integration for the benefit of residents in both communities.
Senior officials of Ipokia Local Government, including the Vice Chairman, Secretary to the Local Government, Leader of the Legislative Council, Heads of Departments, Supervisors, and other key stakeholders, were also present at the engagement.
