Speaker Abbas Declares Ogun Rep,’Ijaya’ Seat Vacant Following Lawmaker’s Death

Abuja – The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has officially declared the seat of the Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State vacant following the death of Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, popularly known as Ijaya.

Onanuga, who served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, passed away on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

Announcing the vacancy on Wednesday, Speaker Abbas cited Section 68(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for the decision.

With this declaration, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to schedule a bye-election to fill the vacant seat.

The Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North constituency is among five vacant seats in the House of Representatives—four resulting from the deaths of members and one due to the resignation of Hon. Dennis Idahosa, who is now the Deputy Governor of Edo State.

INEC is yet to announce a date for the bye-elections to fill the vacant positions in both the National and State Assemblies.
