Abiodun Mourns Fasoranti, Says Nigeria Has Lost a Democratic Icon

Ogun State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, describing his passing as a monumental loss to the Yoruba nation and Nigeria.

Abiodun, in a condolence message, commiserated with the Afenifere socio-political organisation, Ondo State Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, other Yoruba leaders, and the family, associates and admirers of the deceased.

The governor described Fasoranti, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, as a patriot whose life was devoted to public service, the advancement of the Yoruba people and the development of Nigeria.

He noted that the late elder statesman played a significant role in the country’s democratic struggle, particularly during the years of military rule, when he stood firmly in defence of democratic governance, constitutional rule and the fundamental rights of citizens.

According to Abiodun, Fasoranti remained committed to the ideals of justice, equity, good governance and restructuring, consistently advocating a fairer and more prosperous Nigeria.

The governor described the late Afenifere leader as one of the surviving representatives of a generation of nationalist-minded leaders who challenged authoritarianism and championed democratic freedoms, adding that his death had created a significant void in the Yoruba socio-political landscape.

He said Fasoranti’s legacy would endure through the principles he upheld, the causes he championed and the generations of Nigerians inspired by his commitment to democracy and national development.

Abiodun urged Afenifere, the people of Ondo State, the Yoruba nation and the deceased’s family to take solace in his remarkable life and enduring contributions to society.

He prayed that God would grant the departed elder statesman eternal rest and give his family, associates and the entire Yoruba nation the strength to bear the loss.
