Ogun Assembly Minority Leader, Six PDP Lawmakers Defect to APC

Abeokuta – The Ogun State House of Assembly has become a one-party legislature following the defection of six lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors, led by the Minority Leader, Hon. Lukman Adeleye (Odogbolu State Constituency), formally submitted their resignation letter from the PDP during plenary on Tuesday. The letter was read by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide.
Other defecting lawmakers include Hon. Dickson Awolaja (Remo-North), Hon. Lawal Samsudeen (Ogun Waterside), Hon. Waliu Owode (Ijebu-East), Hon. Oluseun Adesanya (Ijebu-North East), and Hon. Damilare Bello (Sagamu I).
In their letter, the legislators cited internal crisis within the PDP as a reason for their resignation, stating that it had “increasingly hindered effective and adequate political engagements.” They added that their decision was driven by the need to align with a transformative platform that would enable them to deliver meaningful democratic dividends to their constituents.
Meanwhile, the Speaker has invited nominees for the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to appear for screening. The nominees, whose list was forwarded by Governor Dapo Abiodun, are: Mr Babatunde Adetona Osibodu, Mr Tunji Akoni, Mr Ayodele Bankole, Mrs Gbemisola Onasanya, and Mrs Oluwaremilekun Olaopa. They are to submit 30 copies each of their curriculum vitae and credentials to the Office of the Clerk before the screening date.
Also at plenary, four bills scaled first reading. They include the Survey and Geoinformatics Bill, the Ogun State Judicial Institute Bill, the Ogun State Education and Skills Trust Fund Bill, and the Ogun State Rural Access Roads Agency (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
