Tragic Incident During Nigerian Army Route March in Yaba, Lagos Claims Soldier’s Life

A tragic incident occurred earlier today during the Nigerian Army’s Bi-Annual Route March near Myhoung Barracks in Yaba, Lagos State, resulting in the death of a soldier and injuries to several others. The exercise, designed to enhance operational readiness, involved troops from various Nigerian Army formations across Lagos State.

According to a statement released by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division Nigerian Army, the incident occurred when a private vehicle recklessly drove into the marching troops. The collision led to the death of one soldier, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The deceased has been deposited in the mortuary, and the injured are currently receiving medical treatment at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba. The 81 Division Military Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, has launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, General Officer Commanding the 81 Division Nigerian Army, expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and assured the public that the Division remains committed to its constitutional mandate of safeguarding lives and property. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and called for calm as investigations continue.

The Nigerian Army had earlier announced the route march through various media platforms to inform the public and ensure safety during the exercise. Despite this tragic event, the 81 Division reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining operational readiness and continuing its training activities.
