Ijebu’s Pursuit of Political Equity in Ogun State: Navigating Challenges and Embracing Hope

In the intricate landscape of Ogun State politics, concerns about representation have become a focal point, especially within the Ijebu community. The looming 2027 formation raises pivotal questions regarding the equitable distribution of political power in a region known for its intricate alliances and historical compromises.

The current scenario, where both the incumbent Senator, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, hail from Remo in Ogun East, triggers a valid inquiry into the principles of fairness. The decision for Senator Lekan Mustapha from Ijebu to step down for OGD adds complexity, leaving the Ijebus contemplating their role in the upcoming political landscape.

Ogun East, comprising 9 local governments, presents a numerical advantage of 6 to 3 in favor of Ijebu, intensifying concerns about equitable representation. As OGD considers a potential return from Remo in 2027, the Ijebus find themselves pondering their place in national politics, especially if the incumbent Governor also decides to run for the same Senate seat.

The historical absence of an Ijebu governor in Ogun State since Chief Olabisi Onabanjo’s tenure in 1983 echoes a deep-seated sense of neglect. The Yewas’ two opportunities, orchestrated by Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Senator Ibikunle Amosun, failed to materialize, indirectly impacting the Ijebus.

In the face of these challenges, questions arise about the roles of prominent figures like Senator Lekan Mustapha, Jimmy Adebisi Lawal, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, and Hon Dapo Okubadejo The Ijebus, having felt relegated to the political periphery, are now vocalizing their aspirations for gubernatorial representation in 2027.

As the political chessboard unfolds, the Ijebus passionately advocate for a fair and inclusive political landscape that amplifies the diverse voices within Ogun East. The echoes of their plea for rightful representation resonate strongly, calling for a recalibration of political dynamics to embrace the aspirations of the Ijebu community in Ogun State.
