Ogun Assembly Advances Agriculture, Vehicle Inspection Bills for Further Scrutiny
Abeokuta – The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed for second reading two key bills aimed at strengthening agricultural development and improving road safety across the state, with Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide assured that all proposed legislation would undergo thorough scrutiny before passage.
Speaking during plenary, the Speaker said the relevant House Committees, in collaboration with critical stakeholders, would carefully examine every bill to ensure they do not duplicate existing laws, conflict with extant legislation, or impose unnecessary regulatory burdens on residents.
Elemide gave the assurance while responding to observations raised by Hon. Lukman Adeleye, former Speaker Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo and other lawmakers during debate on the Ogun State Agricultural Advancement and Sustainability Bill, 2025 and the Vehicle Inspection Services (Establishment) Bill, 2026.
Leading the debate on the Agriculture Bill, its sponsor, Hon. Babatunde Tella, said the proposed legislation seeks to reposition agriculture as a major driver of food security, employment generation, rural development, and economic growth. According to him, the bill promotes year-round farming through irrigation, mechanised agriculture, high-yield crops, youth participation, improved security, market access, and stronger private-sector involvement, backed by a clear implementation framework.
Contributing to the debate, Hon. Waliu Owode said the bill would help address rising food prices, reduce unemployment, modernise farming practices, and encourage the establishment of new farm settlements.
Former Speaker Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo and other lawmakers also supported the bill, with Oluomo advocating incentives to encourage more civil servants to embrace farming to boost food production in the state.
Presenting the Vehicle Inspection Services (Establishment) Bill, 2026, the sponsor, Hon. Oluseun Adesanya, explained that the legislation would provide the legal framework for establishing vehicle inspection services in Ogun State to improve roadworthiness standards, safety, and efficiency in the transportation sector.
Following extensive deliberations, the Speaker referred the Agriculture Bill to the House Committee on Agriculture and Food Security, while the Vehicle Inspection Services Bill was committed to the House Committee on Transportation for further legislative consideration.
