Abuja, Nigeria – The National Assembly has announced a **seven-day suspension** of all legislative activities in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London at the age of 82.

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, following directives from the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The statement read: “The National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria mourns the passing of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, who died yesterday in London, United Kingdom.”

It further stated that “all legislative activities are suspended immediately until Tuesday, 22 July 2025,” to allow lawmakers and the public to participate fully in the burial rites of the late former leader.

The leadership of both chambers extended their condolences to the Federal Government, the people of Katsina State, and the bereaved family, including Buhari’s wife, children, and relatives.

The statement also paid tribute to Buhari’s legacy, describing him as a leader committed to Nigeria’s unity and integrity. It concluded with a prayer: “May Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”

Buhari, who governed Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, will be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
