Breaking: Ijebu Ode Markets to Reopen Monday After Mourning Period for Awujale
Ijebu Ode, Ogun State – Major markets in Ijebu Ode, including Ita Ale, Ita Osu, and Oke Aje, are set to officially reopen for full business operations on Monday, July 21, 2025. This announcement was made by the Ijebu Ode Local Government, signalling the end of a customary mourning period observed in honour of the late Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona GCON.

In a public statement signed by Hon. Dare Alebiosu, the Executive Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government, it was clarified that the decision to reopen was made in consultation with relevant traditional authorities. The local government emphasised the importance of balancing respect for the departed monarch with the need to alleviate economic hardship for its citizens.
The statement also addressed and refuted rumours regarding a prolonged market closure. “Let it be noted that no directive was ever issued to shut down markets for 75 days, and such reports are completely false,” the announcement read.
The local government appreciated the general public, traders, and market stakeholders for their cooperation, patience, and respect demonstrated throughout the sensitive mourning period. Hon. Alebiosu reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to upholding order, tradition, and the welfare of all Ijebu sons and daughters.
The peaceful transition of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, a highly revered royal father, led to the observance of the customary mourning period, ensuring traditional rites were respectfully conducted for the “Orisa of Ijebuland.”
