A Lifetime in Agriculture: Dr. Adeola Samson Odedina Celebrates Full Circle with Teak Harvest

Dr. Adeola Samson Odedina, a distinguished figure in Nigerian agriculture and former Commissioner for Agriculture in Ogun State, is celebrating a deeply personal and significant milestone: the commencement of the first harvest from his 28-year-old teak plantation.
This event marks a “full circle moment” in a career rich with dedication to tree crops and agricultural development.
Dr. Odedina’s connection to the field runs deep. Thirty years ago, in 1996, he was appointed Head of the Tree Crops unit at Obafemi Awolowo University’s Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T) Akure, an institution now known as the Federal College of Agriculture, Akure. What makes this particularly remarkable is his profound personal history with the college: he was a student there, later worked there, and ultimately became its Provost and Chief Executive – the first alumnus to hold this leadership position since the college’s establishment in 1957.
As Head of the Tree Crops unit, Dr. Odedina invested immense passion and dedication into his work. Under the mentorship of the late Provost, Dr. Adetoro, his former Soil Science teacher, he was entrusted with the vital task of revitalising the unit. Through tireless effort and hard work, he oversaw the expansion and rehabilitation of the tree crop plantation originally established by the institution’s founding fathers in 1957. This involved replanting old palm trees and establishing new plantations of teak, rubber, and cocoa. Dr. Odedina described it as a privilege to contribute to preserving the institution’s legacy while simultaneously innovating and improving the plantation.
The journey to his current harvest began in 1998, when Dr. Odedina acquired a personal 2.5 acres of land on what were then the outskirts of Akure for less than ₦100,000. On this land, driven by an appreciation for their beauty and potential, he planted teak trees.
Today, 28 years later, Dr. Odedina expresses immense joy as he begins to reap the fruits of his foresight and labour. The prospect of generating income and creating furniture from the harvested teak is a source of great excitement. “I’m grateful to God for granting me life to experience this fulfilment,” he shared. “From working with tree crops to harvesting the fruits of my labour, it’s a full circle moment, and I’m humbled to share my story.”
