APC lawmaker describes Sowore’s rearrest as a desecration of the judiciary
The member representing Egbeda Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Honourable Akin Alabi, reacted to the rearrest of Omoyele Sowore on Friday, December 6 in a tweet.
Sowore is the convener of #RevolutionNow, a social action movement in Nigeria and the publisher of an online newspaper. After spending 124 days in detention, Sowore regained his freedom on Thursday, December 5, after the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his release for the third time.
However, on Friday, December 6, Sowore was rearrested by the operatives of DSS at the office of the secret police after making an initial attempt to do so inside the Federal High Court premises immediately after the end of the proceedings.
The rearrest of Sowore just hours after he was released has sparked outrage all over the country. Alabi, a member of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), described the rearrest of Sowore as “a desecration of the judiciary.” “No matter whose side you are on, this cannot be right in any way,” he wrote on micro-blogging site, Twitter.
Meanwhile, two sets of protesters on Friday, December 5 besieged the Federal High Court in Abuja to protest for and against the release of Sowore.
The protesters, carrying placards with various inscriptions arrived court chanting songs for and against Mr Sowore. While one group was canvassing for Sowore’s release, the other group, allegedly sponsored by the DSS was calling for his prosecution.
