Boundary Dispute: Ifo Chairman Urges Lagos to Call Ojodu Chairman to Order Over Signpost

The Chairman of Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, Kusimo Idris Olalekan, has urged the Lagos State Government to call the Chairman of Ojodu Local Government to order over the erection of a signpost bearing the inscription, “Welcome to Lagos State,” at a disputed location along the Yakoyo–Ojodu Road.

Olalekan expressed concern that the signpost could create confusion among residents and road users over the boundary between Ogun and Lagos states, particularly around Yakoyo in Isheri-Ojodu Ward, which Ifo Local Government claims falls within Ogun State’s territorial jurisdiction.

The council’s position comes amid renewed concerns over the territorial limits of the two neighbouring states in the affected area, following the construction of a road by the Ogun State Government under Governor Dapo Abiodun.

According to the Ifo Local Government, the placement of the signpost amounts to an assertion of jurisdiction over a location it claims belongs to Ogun State. The council therefore called on the Lagos State Government to intervene and prevent actions that could escalate the disagreement.

It noted that the boundary issue around the Yakoyo–Ojodu axis had generated concerns over the years, urging both state governments and their respective local government authorities to handle the matter with caution to avoid unnecessary tension among residents.

The council called for an objective determination of the disputed boundary using official records, approved survey coordinates and other relevant government documents to establish the precise territorial limits of both states.

It maintained that resolving the dispute through authoritative records would protect residents’ interests, prevent further misunderstandings and preserve peaceful relations between Ogun and Lagos states.

Olalekan also urged the Lagos State Government to ensure that the actions of local government officials did not undermine the cordial relationship between the two states, particularly in communities situated along their shared boundary.

The chairman reaffirmed Ifo Local Government’s commitment to protecting the interests of its residents, adding that the council would continue to pursue a resolution through appropriate channels.

He called on all parties to exercise restraint and respect established territorial boundaries pending an authoritative clarification of the disputed location.
