Ogun Assembly Passes Safe Termination of Pregnancy Bill, Four Others Scale First Reading
ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed the Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026, alongside the consideration of four other bills at first reading.
The safe termination bill, with the short title “H.B. No. 036/OG/2026 – Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026,” seeks to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, promote safe motherhood and reproductive health rights, and establish conditions for the safe termination of pregnancy in accordance with specified legal indications.
The bill was passed during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The passage followed the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Health by its Chairman, Hon. Wahab Haruna, who moved for its adoption. The motion was seconded by the Chief Whip, Hon. Omobola Bakare, and supported by the lawmakers through a voice vote.
The bill was subsequently considered and adopted clause-by-clause by the Committee of the Whole House.
The motion for its third reading was moved by Hon. Babatunde Tella and seconded by Hon. Lukman Adeleye. It was unanimously supported by the lawmakers, after which the Clerk and Head of Legislative Service, Mr. Sakiru Adabakin, read the bill for the third time.
The Speaker thereafter directed the Clerk to transmit a clean copy of the legislation to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his assent.
Meanwhile, four other bills scaled first reading during the plenary. They are the Gender Balance in Political and Public Offices Bill, 2026; Group Liability for Offences of Violence, Extortion and Secret Societies (GLOVES) Bill, 2026; Victims’ Rights Bill, 2026; and the Ogun State Human Sacrifice Prevention and Prohibition Bill, 2026.
The bills were read for the first time before the lawmakers by the Clerk and Head of Legislative Service.
Assembly Pardons Former Deputy Speaker
In another development, the 10th Ogun State House of Assembly resolved to pardon a former Deputy Speaker of the 9th Legislature, Hon. Dare Kadiri, by converting his previous removal from office to a resignation.
Presenting the report of the Committee of the Whole House on Kadiri’s letter of appeal, the Assembly Chief Whip, Hon. Omolola Bakare, said the committee had met on August 18, 2026, to consider his request for the conversion of his impeachment and removal from office as Deputy Speaker to a voluntary resignation.
According to the report, Kadiri’s appeal was not intended to revisit the circumstances that led to his removal, apportion blame, play politics or establish his innocence regarding the issues of the time.
Rather, the report stated that the request was made by the former lawmaker as a former member of the House who wished to bring the chapter of his public service to a peaceful and dignified conclusion.
Bakare subsequently moved for the adoption of the report, which was seconded by Hon. Bisi Oyedele and supported by the lawmakers through a voice vote.
