Peter Obi Breaks Silence on Anambra Election, Reaffirms Support for Labour Party

ANAMBRA STATE – The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has broken his silence on the upcoming Anambra State governorship election, declaring he will support his party’s candidate while insisting on a peaceful and credible process.

Obi made this known on Wednesday while addressing journalists in his hometown of Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area.

The former Governor of Anambra State clarified that his primary concern transcends party rivalry and hinges on ensuring the November 8th poll is free, fair, and transparent.

“For this election, my party is the Labour Party. I want a free and fair election. All the contestants are my friends. As a member of the Labour Party, I am supporting our candidate, but not to the extent of vote buying because I can never buy votes,” Obi stated.

He confirmed that he has actively campaigned for the Labour Party’s standard-bearer but emphasised that the ultimate decision must rest with the people of Anambra, who must be allowed to choose their next governor without coercion or inducement.

“I cannot go to the extent of doing anything untoward for the election. I want the election to be totally free and fair. I’m not on the ballot, and I believe that all those contesting are related to me one way or the other. Let Anambra people decide who will be their governor,” he added.

Reflecting on his own legacy, Obi, who governed the state from 2006 to 2014, reminded the public that he left office at the age of 52 and has since focused on broader national development issues rather than personal political gains.

This appeal for issue-based politics and a level playing field for all candidates echoes a similar stance he took during the 2021 Anambra governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has previously assured voters of adequate security and impartial conduct ahead of the November poll.
