PDP Suspends Senator Amosun Following Abeokuta Clash With Governor’s Convoy

ABEOKUTA – July 21, 2005 – The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Senator Ibikunle Amosun from the party with immediate effect.

The disciplinary action, announced on Wednesday, follows a violent clash on Monday between supporters of the Senator and the convoy of the state Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, in the state capital, Abeokuta.

The decision was reached after an extended meeting of the party’s State Executive Council. In a statement released after the meeting, the party declared that the suspension would last for one month initially.

This one-month period will allow the party’s disciplinary committee to conduct a full investigation into the incident that led to the public disturbance. The committee has been mandated to ascertain the facts and recommend further action.

The clash, which caused tension in the city, is seen as a manifestation of the deepening political rift within the state’s ruling party.
