Ogun SSG, Talabi Hails Oru Muslim Community’s Interfaith Harmony at Installation of New Chief Imam

The Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi, has extolled the Oru-Ijebu Muslim community as a model of religious tolerance, speaking at the turbaning ceremony of the town’s new Chief Imam, Alhaji Imam Muhammad Jamiu Eyinlohun.

Representing Governor Dapo Abiodun at the well-attended event, Talabi described the installation as “a significant milestone” and a living proof of the community’s commitment to faith, tradition and spiritual advancement.

“Today, we celebrate not merely a ceremony, but a renewal of hope and a reaffirmation of the vital role religious leaders play in promoting peace, harmony and progress,” Talabi said. “The Imam acts as a bridge, connecting communities and offering guidance far beyond the mosque.”

In a striking demonstration of the town’s interfaith spirit, a local church made a financial donation to the mosque during the installation. The new Chief Imam, widely known for his preaching on religious tolerance, has often cited leadership models in which diverse communities coexist without the rancour typical of political contests.

Talabi expressed confidence that the new Chief Imam would serve with integrity, wisdom and compassion, while urging him to champion interfaith dialogue and actively contribute to the development of Ogun State. “We believe in the power of faith to unite us, and we are confident that the Imam will be a strong advocate for peace and understanding,” he stated.

Reiterating the state government’s steadfast commitment to religious freedom and its support for all faith communities, Talabi called on residents to collaborate across religious lines. “Let us build a state where tolerance, understanding and mutual respect prevail. Let us strive to create an environment where all people feel safe, valued and respected,” the SSG said.

The event drew notable dignitaries, including the member representing Ijebu North, Ijebu East and Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency, Hon. Joseph Adegbesan; the Commissioner for Community Development and Cooperatives, Hon. Ademola Balogun; the wife of the SSG, Mrs Derin Talabi; and the Iyaloja of Oru, among others.

The highlight of the occasion was the formal turbaning of Alhaji Imam Muhammad Jamiu Eyinlohun, marked by prayers for a tenure characterised by justice, fairness, and divine guidance.
