Ogun APM Gov. Candidate, Akinlade, Battles for Survival as APC Rejects His Return to Party

On the altar of the interest of the immediate past governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunl Amosun, to fix a successor, his protégée, who was a federal lawmaker, Honorable Abdukabir Adekunle Akinlade, suddenly became a factor in the politics of the state as his godfather presented him as the anointed candidate. Amosun could not realize his aim of seeing Akinlade become the standard bearer of the party from the primary election; he quickly resuscitated a party, APM on whose platform he Akinlade eventually contested the governorship election in March.

It is now history how he lost at the polls, as well as in his redress moves that saw him go from the election Tribunal to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had affirmed the election of Governor Dapo Abiodun of APC as the governor of the state.

Following his unfruitful outing at the court, Akinlade seems to have reviewed the situation of things and come in terms with the fact that his political cannot be guaranteed if he remains a member of APM, thereby made up his mind to return to APC, a platform on which his godfather, Amosun is presently a member of the Senate.

Akinlade announced his return to the APC at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the APM Secretariat in Abeokuta. He also directed his supporters to return to the “pre-October 2018 APC.”

He explained that the decision to return to APC was taken during a stakeholders’ meeting of leaders and elders of Ogun APC on Sunday.

However, going by the latest development, Akinalde may have found himself in an ordeal as his acclaimed return to APC may have hit a brick wall, following denying knowledge of Akinlade’s return by the party leadership in the state.

The publicity secretary of All Progressives Congress (caretaker committee), Tunde Oladunjoye, while speaking to newsmen in Abeokuta, said the party was yet to get any official message that Akinalde was back in the party.

Independent investigations however revealed Akinlade is not likely to have it easy to find a space within the APC fold in Ogun state as he’s said to be likely made a scapegoat.
