DAPO ABIODUN: A PRINCE THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM A SLAVE BY OLUMIDE ABIODUN

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn (Prov. 29:2).There is no doubt that Ogun State has been in the light of this biblical line since Prince Dapo Abiodun MFR was sworn in as Governor.

Chronicling governance styles of successive administrations in the state since 2003, it is clear that governors before Dapo Abiodun were guilty of sacking workers employed by their predecessors. This infamy was much more pronounced in the days of Amosun. He did not only sack workers that were employed by his predecessor, he went as far as demolishing projects made by his predecessor. The Expo Park at Kuto Abeokuta comes to mind here.

Yes, it is not perfectly right for a government that spent eight years in office without employing workers to roll out the forms of employment for a thousand workers days to the end of its stay in office. That said, it is evil to forcefully disengage those workers when they met all requirements. After all, the same government promised employment into the service during electioneering campaign and those employed were Ogun State natives and residents.

Former governor Amosun promised the people of Ogun State the recruitment of 10,000 workers into the public and civil service during his campaign for office but contrary to his promise of job provision, on assumption of office in 2011 he disengaged 2000 workers employed by his predecessor on the ground that they were engaged late by Otunba Gbenga Daniel administration. The affected workers staged a protest to the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan to appeal to him that they met all requirements, Amosun promised to look into their case which he did not do. The workers stayed sacked till he left office after eight years.

It was therefore shocking that same Amosun could employ fresh civil and public servants in the twilight of his eight years administration. The same government that tricked Ogun State unemployed youths to obtain job forms for a fee without giving them the jobs. Ogun State people were left in a very confused state of not knowing what to believe was reason for his very late employment. Could it be that he realized too late he promised employment or was it a deliberate attempt to lay landmine for the next administration that would later implode or explode in the state civil and public services leading to destabilization of the new government? Was he not the same person that sacked those employed by his predecessor on the ground that they were engaged towards the end of the administration before him? So many questions begging for an answer.

But today, Ogun State is in the hands of a Prince, Dapo Abiodun and so far so good, his style of governance has proven the saying of the elders that *Omooba kii jagun bi eru*. Amosun played bad politics for his predecessor. He employed over a thousand workers days to the end of his stay in office. Exactly what he described as bad when he was sworn in on May 29, 2011.

However, these are lucky ones because a new Sheriff is in Oke-Mosan, one that fears God and respect people. A leader that also appreciates the value of the mandate given to him through election. Abiodun unlike Amosun chose to confirm their appointment. They were not sacked like Amosun sacked those he met. The Iperu-Remo Prince chose not to fight dirty like a slave. He is too Godly to engage in vendetta. Governor Abiodun while swearing-in newly appointed permanent secretaries in the state on January 8th, 2020 announced his decision to absorb over 1,000 workers employed by Amosun administration in April 2019 and that he has done.

Recall that Amosun administration had in April appointed 18 permanent secretaries, barely a month to the end of his administration and also promoted 5,000 government workers but governor Abiodun despite the unsatisfactory feedback and committee reports received by his administration on the appointment and promotions did not follow ignoble path of his predecessor. Instead, he absorbed the permanent secretaries and accepted the promotions done with full benefits. What a governor with a large heart! The magnanimity showed to the eighteen last minute permanent secretaries and over a thousand workers will go down well in the annals of Ogun State and Nigeria at large.

There is no doubt that Prince Dapo Abiodun is living his promise to serve. Truly when the righteous rules, the people rejoice.
