BREAKING: Ogun PDP Holds Parallel Local Govt Congress Amid Factions

Abeokuta, Ogun State – Tensions rose in Ogun State as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held parallel local government congresses across the state’s 20 local government areas today. This development follows the party’s earlier parallel Ward Congress held on August 31, 2024.

The factional divide within the Ogun PDP pits the group led by 2023 governorship candidate Hon. Ladi Adebutu against the coalition comprising Otunba Jimi Adebisi Lawal, 2023 deputy governorship candidate Hon. Abdulkadir Adekunle Akinlade, and immediate past State Chairman Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele.

Sources indicate that in each local government area, two sets of executives emerged for all 18 available positions. Notable examples include:

– Ijebu Ode LGA: Hon. Gbede Oluwasegun (Lawal group) and Mr Kehinde Ajetunmobi (Adebutu group) as party chairmen.
– Abeokuta South LGA: Hon. Adeyemi Surajudeen (Lawal group) and Mr Sanusi Sakiru (Adebutu group) as party chairmen.
– Yewa South LGA: Hon. Ogundare Samuel (Lawal group) and Mr Lateef Onifade (Adebutu group) as party chairmen.

The parallel congresses stem from disagreements over the use of authenticated registers provided by the national PDP leadership for the Ward Congress, allegedly favouring the Lawal group.

The PDP’s Constitution (as amended in 2017) mandates the use of authenticated registers, outlining delegates’ names for the Ward Congress, in line with Section 8 (10).

The development has sparked uncertainty within the Ogun PDP, with implications for the party’s unity and future elections.
