Lagos, Nigeria – The Nigerian football community is in mourning following the death of legendary goalkeeper Peter Rufai. The news of his passing, reported by *Radio Nigeria*, has sent shockwaves across the nation and beyond, though an official statement from his family is still awaited.
Rufai, fondly remembered as *Dodomayana*, was a cornerstone of Nigeria’s golden football era. He was the first-choice goalkeeper during the Super Eagles’ triumphant 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign and represented Nigeria at two FIFA World Cups—USA 1994 and France 1998. With over 60 caps for the national team, Rufai was celebrated for his leadership, agility, and commanding presence in goal.
Beyond his international success, Rufai enjoyed a distinguished club career in Europe, featuring for teams in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. After retiring from professional football, he dedicated himself to nurturing young talent through his *Staruf Academy* in Lagos, advocating for education and discipline among aspiring athletes.
Known for his professionalism and regal demeanour—stemming from his heritage as the son of a traditional ruler—Rufai leaves behind a lasting legacy in Nigerian football. Tributes have begun pouring in from former teammates, coaches, and fans, honouring his contributions to the sport.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
