ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State Government has announced the employment of over 7,000 teachers since the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun came into office.

The government also disclosed that it has committed ₦24 billion through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to the provision and rehabilitation of education infrastructure across the state.

The disclosures were made on Sunday during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Representing Governor Abiodun at the event, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi, said the administration would continue to prioritise teachers’ welfare, school infrastructure and improved learning outcomes.

He said the Ogun State Education Revitalisation Agenda (OGSERA) remained a major vehicle for transforming the education sector through improvements in curriculum delivery, school management, technology, infrastructure and funding.

The governor also announced the absorption of over 1,500 OgunTEACh interns into the mainstream civil service, with appointment letters presented to the beneficiaries during the ceremony.

Abiodun described teachers as the foundation upon which every profession and society is built, saying their impact could be seen in the lives and achievements of those they had trained.

The state government also rewarded outstanding teachers, administrators and schools with over ₦51 million in cash prizes.

First-place winners in the Best Teacher categories received ₦2.5 million each, while second- and third-place winners received ₦1.5 million and ₦1 million respectively.

NUT Commends Abiodun

The Ogun State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Sewakanu Noah Oladipupo, commended the state government for its interventions in the education sector.

Oladipupo said more than 6,000 teachers had been recruited through the OgunTEACh platform, noting that there had been no teacher recruitment for eight years before the current administration.

He also praised the government for implementing teachers’ promotions from 2016 to 2024 and approving promotions for 2025 and 2026.

The NUT chairman further described the removal of the ceiling that prevented primary school teachers from progressing beyond Grade Level 16 as a major development that had restored hope and dignity to the profession.

The event, themed “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status and Shaping Our Future,” brought together government officials, teachers, education administrators, union leaders, school proprietors and other stakeholders.

The celebration also highlighted the contributions of teachers to the development of Ogun State and the nation.SEO headline: Ogun Teachers: Abiodun Employs 7,000, Absorbs 1,500 OgunTEACh Interns
