A Tribute to Daddy Senator Adefuye — 81 Years of Grace, Grit, and Greatness

There are lives that flicker like candles, and there are lives that blaze like beacons—casting light far beyond their immediate shores. Daddy Senator (Chief) Anthony Ògúngbémí Adéfuyè is a lighthouse in the ocean of Nigeria’s history, a man whose beam of influence has guided countless ships—politicians, protégés, friends, and communities—safely to their destinations. At 81, his story is a well-bound book whose chapters speak of courage, loyalty, generosity, and unwavering principle.
To me, he is more than a mentor; he is a father whose warmth mirrors that of my late Dad, Lt. General Oladipo Diya, his dear friend and ally in the noble task of building a better Nigeria. In his counsel, I have found an anchor. In his example, I have found a compass. And in his life, I have found a living proof of the proverb, “Those who respect the elderly pave their own road toward wisdom.”
He has walked corridors of power without letting them change the texture of his heart. As a Senator of the Federal Republic, he spoke not merely with the authority of office, but with the authenticity of conviction. As a member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council, his voice has been the oil that keeps the engine of dialogue running smoothly, his politics defined by the rare gift of “disagreeing without being disagreeable.” He has worn the crown of leadership, not as a badge to dominate, but as a lamp to light the path for others—true to the adage, “An elder’s wisdom is a nation’s compass.”
His generosity flows like a river—quiet, constant, life-giving—nourishing the soil of communities, places of worship, cultural institutions, and countless individual lives. He is a bridge across generational divides, a man who has stood in Òdóléwù not just as its Asiwaju but as its heartbeat, making December’s Òdóléwù Day a living festival of unity, political connection, and communal pride.
The laughter of Daddy Senator Adefuye is an inheritance in itself—rich, unrestrained, the kind that disarms tension and makes friends out of strangers. His wisdom is not stored in distant speeches, but in everyday acts: a timely intervention, a quiet donation, a word of encouragement, a nudge toward honour. He is proof that relevance is not maintained by clinging to the past but by continuously watering the present.
On this 81st birthday, my prayer is that the sun above him never sets in bitterness, that his days be long and lit with joy, that the land he has served so well continues to flourish under the shade of his example. Baba, you are not just counted among the elders—you are counted among the irreplaceable. And for as long as God gives us breath, your name will remain carved in the granite of gratitude in our hearts.
Happy birthday, Daddy Senator Adefuye. May you continue to grow from grace to greatness, from greatness to glory.
With boundless respect, gratitude, and love,
*Dr. Tunde Diya*
Chairman, Odogbolu Local Government
