OGEPA Shuts Down Bonny Pie Industry Over Wastewater Pollution Allegations

ABEOKUTA – The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has sealed Bonny Pie Industry in Akinbo Township, Ewekoro Local Government Area, following allegations that the company discharged untreated wastewater into a river serving the local community

The enforcement action, carried out on Thursday by OGEPA’s Enforcement Unit, came on the directive of the agency’s General Manager, Hon. Kehinde Bello. It was prompted by a petition from the Olu of Akinbo, Oba Rasheed Olamilekan, who raised concerns about potential environmental and public health risks posed by the discharge.

“The company had been discharging untreated wastewater into a river that serves the Akinbo community,” the traditional ruler alleged in his petition.

After receiving the complaint, OGEPA’s enforcement team visited the facility for a preliminary inspection. The agency said it decided to seal the industry immediately to prevent further environmental degradation, while a comprehensive investigation continues.

Speaking on the development, Bello reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations. “We assure residents of Akinbo community that the investigation will be thorough and transparent,” he said. “Appropriate actions will be taken based on the outcome of our findings.”

OGEPA has urged industries operating in the state to comply with established environmental standards, warning that violations will attract sanctions.
