Falcons beat Gambia 1-0

The Super Falcons  on Wednesday defeated  Gambia 1-0 in the first leg of their Ghana 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier in Banjul.

FalconsThe tournament holds from November 17 to December 1.

Amarachi Okronkwo’s goal  settled the tie in favour of the African champions. The second leg of the tie comes up on June 11 at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.

Coach Thomas Dennerby’s largely-foreign-based side dominated play and gave the hosts little chance for an upset. But the Gambians held their own against the superior Falcons.

African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala and Desire Oparanozie piled pressure on the Gambian defence but the Falcons failed to make the pressure count.

A long range effort from Okoronkwo in the 19th minute beat the Gambian goalkeeper but the Falcons failed to score more goals despite dominating the encounter.

The Gambians eliminated Burkina Faso to reach the final round of the qualifying race. The winners of the tie over the two legs qualify for the tournament.
