Breaking: APC Sweeps Rivers LG Polls, Wins 20 of 23 Councils

Port Harcourt – In a stunning electoral upset, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has decisively won the just-concluded local government elections in Rivers State, claiming victory in 20 of the 23 local government areas.

The results, announced on Sunday afternoon by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), mark a significant blow to the state’s ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which managed to secure only three LGAs.

The election, which was held on Saturday for chairmanship and councillorship positions, was conducted amid heightened political tensions in the oil-rich state.

In a particularly symbolic defeat, Governor Siminalayi Fubara lost his home local government area of Opobo-Nkoro to the main opposition APC. This result is seen as a major indicator of the shifting political allegiances within the state.

Dr. Michael Odey, Chairman of RSIEC, officially declared the results at the commission’s headquarters along Aba Road in Port Harcourt.

The detailed breakdown of the results and the specific local governments won by each party are expected to be released imminently as the commission finalises the collation from all wards.

This outcome is likely to have profound implications for the political landscape of Rivers State, significantly bolstering the influence of the APC and its leaders, including former Governor Nyesom Wike, while presenting a formidable challenge to the current PDP administration under Governor Fubara.
