ALGON Sets the Record Straight on Local Government Allocations in Ogun

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Ogun State Chapter, has issued a firm rebuttal against allegations of gubernatorial interference in the administration of local councils, declaring such claims as “fabricated.”

In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Hon. Dr Adeyemo Folasade, the association expressed unwavering confidence in and support for Governor Dapo Abiodun’s leadership, describing it as “purposeful, people-centred, and inclusive.”

ALGON emphasised that the relationship between the state government and the 20 local government councils is built on “transparency, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to deepening governance and development at the grassroots.” It specifically commended the Governor for his respect for council autonomy and his “non-interference” in the operations of the State Joint Local Government Account and Allocation Committee (JAAC).

The statement highlighted the JAAC’s role as the central mechanism for ensuring financial prudence. It detailed that funds are not expended arbitrarily but are meticulously managed according to statutory obligations and fiscal realities. Key priorities include the settlement of outstanding pension and gratuity liabilities, timely payment of first-line charges—such as salaries for primary school teachers and stipends for traditional rulers—and ensuring essential obligations are met before new expenditures are undertaken.

“Cash available for spending must therefore be properly planned, processed, and prioritised to avoid situations where Local Governments are unable to meet their obligations,” the statement read. “Fiscal discipline remains central to sustaining effective grassroots governance.”

ALGON praised the consistent discharge of these responsibilities, noting it has “significantly eased the welfare burden on retired Local Government employees and reinforced confidence in public service.”

The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting policies that promote accountable governance and concluded with New Year felicitations to the Governor, expressing confidence that the current collaborative framework will continue to foster development across Ogun State.

The statement serves as a comprehensive defence of the financial governance structure for local councils, aiming to dispel controversies and affirm the integrity of the allocation process under the present administration.
