Tragedy Strikes on Ijebu-Ode-Benin Expressway: 18 Feared Dead in Bus Fire

A devastating auto crash occurred on Monday along the Ijebu-Ode-Benin Expressway in Ogun State, leaving 18 passengers feared dead. The incident happened when a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XA 690 AKU, traveling at high speed, lost control while attempting to avoid a failed portion of the road.

According to eyewitnesses and the driver’s account, a keg of petrol inside the bus fell and spilled onto the floor, eventually dropping onto the exhaust pipe and causing a fire explosion while the bus was in transit. The Ogere Command of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance Agency (TRACE) confirmed the incident.

Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for TRACE, reported that the presumed dead were burnt beyond recognition. The partially burnt driver was rescued and taken to Rona Hospital in Ijebu Ode, but later pronounced dead and deposited at the State Hospital Mortuary.

Fortunately, traffic in the area, initially affected by the accident, has been restored to order, and the road is now clear for vehicular movement.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims.
