BREAKING: Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, Joins His Ancestors at 90

Ibadan– The ancient city of Ibadan has been thrown into mourning following the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. The revered monarch transitioned to the ancestral realm in the early hours of Monday, June 10, 2024. He was 90 years old.

**A Reign Cut Short During Celebrations**
Oba Olakulehin’s passing comes amid the ongoing 90th birthday and first-anniversary coronation celebrations, marking a poignant turn of events for the Ibadan traditional institution. The monarch, who ascended the throne just a year ago, was the 43rd Olubadan and succeeded the late Oba Lekan Balogun, who reigned from 2022 to 2023.

Before his coronation, Oba Olakulehin had served as the Balogun of Ibadanland, the highest-ranking military chief in the traditional hierarchy. His reign, though brief, was marked by efforts to promote peace, cultural preservation, and development in Ibadan. Known for his wisdom and deep connection to Ibadan’s history, he was a stabilising force in the city’s complex chieftaincy system.

The news of his demise has sent shockwaves across Yorubaland, with dignitaries, traditional rulers, and political leaders expressing their condolences. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is expected to make an official statement soon, as preparations for royal rites begin.

With Oba Olakulehin’s passing, the Ibadan chieftaincy system will now activate its succession plan. The next in line, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan, is expected to be presented to the Oyo State government for approval as the 44th Olubadan, pending traditional protocols.

The palace is expected to release details of the burial rites in the coming days, which will follow ancient Ibadan customs. The late monarch will be accorded a full royal funeral befitting his status.

More updates to follow as the story develops.
