Transition Commitee Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, Hon. Ayodeji Shomide, has urged the local government pupulace to stop open defecation with a view to ending the menace in the society.
The Council Chairman on Wednesday, also urged residents of the Local government, especially in the rural areas to imbibe the practice of using toilets in order to curb breakout of endemic diseases which occurred due to defecation in public places.
Speaking during a visitation to Kemta Odutolu Community, Itoku, Abeokuta on Wednesday, the Council Boss, Shomide enlightened the people on dangers in open defecation and how dangerous the dumping of refuse in drainages is, to human lives and properties. ”Open defecation will cause numerous diseases and dumping of refuse in drainages could lead to flood which endangers human’s lives and properties”. The Chairman said.
Hon. Shomide further explained that the ease associated with which the age-long practise might make it attractive but has grave health consequences on everyone not only in the Local Government Area, but anywhere there is open defecation, duping of refuse in drainages or unclean environment.
He said, “open defecation attracts grave health consequences for all human beings. It is a destroyer of our health and pollutant of our environment. Similarly, anytime we step out to openly defecate, we are deliberately inviting water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, and typhoid to ravage the people”.
The Transition Chairman therefore promised to provide adequate needs for the people of the area in order to assure better healthy society.
In his address, the Local Government Director of environment, Mr Akintola advised that people maintain good hygienic standard of living.
