Ogun First Lady, Bamidele Abiodun Appointed as Global Hepatitis Eradication Ambassador

     The wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun has been appointed and decorated as Global Hepatitis Zero Ambassador by The World Hepatitis Eradication Commission, Nigeria,  in recognition of her commitment to the wellbeing of mankind.

    Speaking at the MTR Hall, GRA, Ibara, Abeokuta, The commission’s President, Dr Mike Omotosho, said Mrs Bamidele Abiodun  was decorated due to her commitment to the well-being of mankind in all facets adding that, they were optimistic that she would champion the course of eradicating hepatitis in the State and the world at large

    He noted that the Commission’s sole responsibility was to ensure total obliteration of hepatitis among mankind through advocacy, screening, prophylaxis and treatment, saying the Wife of the Governor, as an Ambassador,   was expected to be the face of the Commission at advocacies for the eradication of the disease.

     Earlier in her welcome address, the Southwest Coordinator for Hepatitis Zero Eradication Project, Princess Florence Egbeyemi disclosed that, between 11 and 14 percent of the world population lived with hepatitis, noting that about 27 million people in Nigeria were infected while about 5 million people died annually of the disease.

    Abiodun, in her remarks, expressed concern about the high prevalence of hepatitis around the world and the high percentage of deaths recorded in the country.

    She pledged her support to create the needed awareness and in screening and treating people living with the disease.

     She appreciated the Commission for recognizing her roles and enlisting her as a partner in progress, promising her full commitment to the course and the coming World Hepatitis Eradication Day.

     In the same vein, the Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Ministry of Health, Dr Adesanya Ayinde, said, “The government will channel resources towards eradication of the viral hepatitis disease to ensure adequate well-being of residents of the state.”

     Ayinde described Hepatitis as a menace that the general public needed to be aware of, while appreciating the Commission for honoring the Wife of the State Governor

    The Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Bamidele, in her acceptance speech expressed optimism that the virus would eventually be eradicated in the State, noting that, massive sensitization and public education on the disease would be embarked upon, in order to actualize the set objectives, with focus on rural dwellers
