Enugu – Barrister Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 Enugu State gubernatorial election, has expressed shock and sadness over the passing of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Worldwide.
In a statement, Edeoga described Iwuanyanwu as a hero of the Igbo people and Nigeria, praising his dedication to the emancipation of his people and the country. He highlighted Iwuanyanwu’s efforts to advance the Igbo cause in Nigeria’s socio-political and economic landscape.
Edeoga recalled his last meeting with Iwuanyanwu on May 30, 2024, saying he showed no signs of critical illness despite being slightly indisposed. He described Iwuanyanwu as a humble, humane, compassionate, and philanthropic leader who dedicated his life to serving others.
Iwuanyanwu was a renowned industrialist, politician, and founder of the Daily Champion newspaper. He was also a recipient of a national award for service to Nigeria. Edeoga said his departure has left a void that will be difficult to fill.
The late Iwuanyanwu was also the Chairman and Chief Executive of Hardel and ENIC, a pioneer civil engineering consortium, and the founder of Iwuanyanwu Nationale, a successful football team. He was committed to education and philanthropy, evident in projects such as the landmark building named after his wife Eudora at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Edeoga’s tribute celebrated Iwuanyanwu’s life and contributions, acknowledging the significant impact he had on many lives.
