Breaking: Ogun Shuts Factory Over Worker’s Silicosis Allegation, Pledges Medical Support

The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate shutdown of African Refractory and Allied Products Limited (ARAP) in Ogijo following a viral video in which a former employee alleged that his health was destroyed by hazardous working conditions at the facility.

The company, which specialises in crushing quartz stones for furnace linings, was closed during a joint fact-finding mission by the Ministry of Environment and the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) on [Date of Visit].

The decision comes after Bartholomew Aniemeka, a former staff member, surfaced in a widely circulated video claiming he contracted silicosis—a debilitating and often fatal lung disease—during his employment at the company before his departure in June 2025.

Leading the investigation, Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya confirmed that the plant will remain non-operational pending the outcome of a full inquiry into the allegations.

“We are taking this matter extremely seriously. The company will be shut until we get to the root of these claims and ensure that all environmental and safety protocols are strictly adhered to,” Oresanya stated.

Addressing the condition of the former employee, the Commissioner assured the public that the government is intervening to ensure his well-being. Oresanya revealed that Aniemeka is currently in stable condition and receiving care at TopMed Hospital in Ogijo, where he has been visited by his sister. The government has committed to covering his medical expenses and a comprehensive series of tests is scheduled to accurately diagnose his health status.

“We have seen the video, and we are concerned not just as a government, but as a people. Bartholomew will receive the necessary medical attention, and we will ensure that justice is served,” Oresanya added.

Silicosis is an incurable interstitial lung disease caused by inhaling fine silica dust, often found in industries involving stone, sand, or concrete. The state government has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the matter to a logical conclusion, holding any defaulting parties accountable.
