Ogun Assembly Backs Establishment of State Police, Passes Resolution
The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution supporting the proposed establishment of State Police Services under the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The resolution, titled *“H.R. No. 194/OG/2025 – Consideration of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026 (Establishment of State Police Services),”* was passed during plenary on Tuesday.
The passage followed the presentation of a report by the Ad-hoc Committee on Constitutional Review, chaired by former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, who presented the committee’s recommendations on 26 clauses and sectional amendments to the Constitution.
While presenting the report, Oluomo took the proposed amendments one after another, with members voting in favour of all the clauses and sections under consideration.
The proposed amendments covered various aspects of the bill, including the substitution, insertion and alteration of specific constitutional provisions.
Following the consideration of the amendments, a motion for the adoption of the committee’s report was moved and seconded by Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju, receiving unanimous support from members through a voice vote.
The House Leader, Hon. Yusuf Sherif, subsequently moved a motion for the adoption of the report as a resolution of the House. The motion was seconded by the Chief Whip, Hon. Omolola Bakare, and unanimously supported by the lawmakers.
Speaking after the passage, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, described the decision as historic, noting that the Ogun Assembly had joined other State Houses of Assembly across the country in supporting the establishment of State Police.
Elemide said the resolution reflected the position of the lawmakers and the people of Ogun State on the need to strengthen the security architecture through the proposed establishment of State Police Services.
According to him, the initiative would enhance security measures, improve the protection of lives and property, and promote the social well-being and economic development of the state.
The Speaker subsequently directed that a clean copy of the resolution be transmitted to the National Assembly to formally communicate Ogun State’s support for the establishment of State Police Services.
